What Caused These Roof Trusses To Collapse?

Truss collapses can result from inadequate temporary bracing during installation.  Some key points to remember while investigating a truss collapse case:

  • The truss installer is responsible for the handling, installation, and temporary bracing.
  • Truss installers should be familiar with the installation practices detailed in BSCI 1-03:  The Guide to Good Practice for Handling, Installing and Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses published by the Wood Truss Council of America (WTCA).
  • Trusses over 60 feet are classified as long span trusses.  BCSI 1-03 suggests consulting a Professional Engineer for temporary bracing of long span trusses.

Assessing the truss installer’s knowledge and experience will aid in determining the cause of the truss collapse.
