After a collision, one of the first questions asked is how fast were “they” going? We ask that question because the speed of vehicles, as they enter a collision, has a great effect on the severity of the crash. We also like to know if someone was exceeding the speed posted speed limit, or was otherwise driving too fast for conditions. The application of the Laws of Physics, in particular mechanics in collision reconstruction, can help us figure out these speeds. Once we know the speeds of the vehicles, we can ask and answer other questions that help us reconcile what people say. We can determine where the vehicles were at various points in time prior to the collision and then who could have or should have done something different and ultimately lead to the resolution of who was responsible for the collision. This course will show you the essentials of time and distance analysis and then present some case studies that demonstrate the solutions we can get with reliable time and distance analysis.
