Machine Design

Manufacturers are responsible for designing and producing safe products for the consumer. In doing so, they rely heavily on designers and engineers to ensure their products are adequate. Thus, safe work places begin with engineering and design.

Successful machine design engineers need to be able to:

  1.  Identify Hazards,
  2. Assess Risks, and
  3. Implement Safety Through Design.

The design engineer must also have a good handle on failure analysis, failure prediction, and failure prevention techniques. It is also crucial for the designer to understand field conditions of the product or device they are designing or modifying. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes design flaws or defects result in mechanical failures, which sometimes result in injury or death.

Good machine design uses machine guards to protect the worker from a hazard. A guard has but one purpose, that purpose is to protect someone from contact with a point of danger. Any guard that does not do this fails its purpose. The Warren Group mechanical engineers can assist you in determining if poor machine design caused an injury or fatality.
