Vehicle Accident Investigation Checklist

Daniel N. Olson, M.S.M.E., P.E.

Remember, a Reconstructionist can see important clues that you may have overlooked in the information you've gathered. Our engineers are happy to discuss your preliminary findings and help you resolve who is responsible.

  • In pictures of the scene, be sure to include stationary objects such as stop signs, trees, side walks, power poles, street signs, etc. Use close-up and wide angle shots.
  • To document what the driver saw, take photographs at the height of the driver.
  • Photograph all sides of the vehicle; both the damaged and undamaged side can provide clues.
  • Use measuring tape to document the height and width in the picture. Length of the skid marks can be helpful in determining speeds. Keep in mind anti-lock brakes will not leave classic skid marks.
  • Witness statements either recorded or written.
    Vehicles available for inspection.
Final resting place of the vehicles.
VIN and tag number can help in locating the manufacturer's specs.
Make and model of the tires.
    Seat position and seat belt.
Return to the scene at a similar time of day to observe the traffic flow.
Preserve lamps if you need to determine if the lights were on or off.
    Copies of the police report.
