Models Bring Accidents to the Courtroom

By Wayne Berry

Photographs, mounted enlargements and PowerPoint Presentations are all very effective in conveying your message in the courtroom. But if you really want to give perspective, bring your accident into the courtroom in 3-D.

Exemplars of smaller objects often find themselves labeled as exhibits. What about the large items that are truly at issue? Size, weight, dimension and many other factors make admission of key pieces impractical. Thus, the courtroom doesn't receive your message as clearly and definitively as you would like. Case in point - a somewhat typical slip and fall with serious injuries.

Your client was injured due to a fall on a poorly constructed asphalt handicap wheelchair ramp. Pictures tell the story in only two dimensions. Small-scale models do not reflect the crucial surface contours of the asphalt ramp. Only the real thing will do.

A lightweight, shape-and-surface accurate ramp was constructed vividly illustrating the shortcomings of the ramp construction. The surface of the model was so detailed that the brush strokes from the blue paint and the grains of sand in the asphalt on the original wheelchair ramp were visible to the naked eye. Not only was the ramp in 3-D, the structure and stability of the ramp allowed for reenactment of the accident.

Full-sized models can be constructed for use in courtroom demonstrations. Unique and innovative modeling techniques make the impossible possible. When you are faced with an issue that can best be presented with a detailed scale model, let the model makers at The Warren Group assess your possibilities.

Challenge
Get the over-sized subject (the asphalt ramp) that caused the accident into the courtroom for demonstration. The actual asphalt ramp is 5' wide, 7' long and 7" thick and is a permanent fixture of which we can not take custody.

Solution
Research high-tech ceramic polymers and rubber compounds and build a model that allows for maximum detail, structural support and portability.

Result
A 35 square foot, 175 pound ceramic polymer casting that is portable, lightweight, and can be walked on in the courtroom. The model vividly illustrates the short-comings of the ramp design and construction.
